Quarter of a Million Facebook fans 'like' P&O Cruises

P&O Cruises has confirmed its status as Australia’s favourite cruise line with yet another social media milestone - 250,000 Facebook “likes”, and growing.


Since launching in June 2009, P&O Cruises’ Facebook page has grown exponentially and is now home to a massive online community of more than 257,000 followers who regularly engage with each other, and the cruise line, about their holiday experiences.


Much like the cruise industry, P&O Cruises’ Facebook page has been growing at a rate of knots, averaging about 12,000 new fans each month in the past year to help elevate the page to one of the top social media sites in the Australian travel industry.


Part of the success lies in the fact that the Facebook page replicates the fun and excitement of a cruise holiday with images of island paradises and happy holiday snaps, engaging polls, creative competitions, special offers and lots of ways for fans to connect such as the popular Facebook Roll Call that allows guests to meet each other before they cruise and count down to their departure together.


The cruise line also uses the page for swift communication and updates with its guests.


Simon Cheng, Director of Marketing at Carnival Australia, which operates P&O Cruises, said social media was a great way for passengers to get to know each other before they cruise and keep in touch long after they’ve disembarked.


“The page is so successful because P&O Cruises’ passengers relish the opportunity to engage in a fun online space and share their love of cruising with others,” Mr Cheng said.


“We were only just celebrating 150,000 “likes” in December last year and now we’ve reached a quarter of a million. It really is an extraordinary milestone and testament to how much our passengers love cruising with us and how social cruising is. Cruising and social media are a match made in heaven and really adds to the excitement before, during and after a cruise.”


With Australian cruise passenger numbers at record highs, Mr Cheng said the cruise line hoped to reach half a million Facebook fans sometime in 2014.
