Carnival Australia Executive Chairman Ann Sherry today paid tribute to legendary New Caledonia shipping agent Gilbert Thong following his recent passing.
Ms Sherry said Gilbert Thong was a true leader and a champion of the growth of cruising in New Caledonia and the South Pacific more widely, who saw the connection between cruising and economic opportunity.
“With his vision and energy, Gilbert was instrumental in working with us to open new cruise destinations and shared our belief that cruise tourism was a catalyst for economic opportunity for island communities, a goal that he held dear,” Ms Sherry said.
“In Gilbert’s passing, New Caledonia has lost a larger-than-life figure whose contribution will long continue to be felt as cruising grows in line with the foundation that he did so much to build.
“I hope there is some comfort for Gilbert’s family in knowing that he was loved and respected by so many people, who, like us had the opportunity to know him and to work closely with him over the years.”
